Found out my water heater anode rod was totally gone after 5 years

I was reading a forum post about home maintenance and someone mentioned checking the anode rod in your water heater. I pulled mine out last weekend and it was basically just a wire with nothing left on it. Has anyone else had theirs rust away faster than expected in ABQ?

Totally gone after 5 years" is pretty much what I saw too. Pulled mine and it was just a stub with some rust flakes left. Friend told me Albuquerque's hard water is basically sandpaper for those rods, so five years might be about average here.

Wait, five years?! That's crazy... I've got a 40 gallon tank I've been babying for like two years and thought that was getting old. So basically I'm sitting on a time bomb here?
