Gave up on the swamp cooler pads every June, then a guy at the True Value on Juan Tabo gave me one tip
For years I was swapping those aspen pads twice a summer because they'd crust over with our hard water by July. A guy at the True Value on Juan Tabo asked if I was pre soaking them and I said no, nobody ever told me that. Soak them in the driveway with the hose for about 20 minutes before you slide them in, and they actually last the whole season now. Also learned to hose off the water distributor spider thing while I'm up there, mine was half clogged and I never noticed. Anyone else got tricks for keeping the pads from turning into chalk by August?
That half clogged spider thing is no joke, mine was so bad last July that the back bedroom was running 78 degrees while the front of the house was fine. I pulled it off and it looked like a chia pet under there, just packed with white crust and dead bugs. Took a wire brush to it and the difference was instant, pads actually got wet all the way across instead of just the edges. Now I just check it every time I swap pads, takes two minutes. The hard water here will wreck anything you leave alone, so you're not wrong to stay on top of it.
