Just learned my 15 year old water heater has a built in sacrificial anode I was supposed to replace every 3 years
I was reading the manual that came with the house after my hot water started smelling like rotten eggs. Found out this part called an anode rod literally dissolves to protect the tank. If I'd swapped it like every 3 years I could have doubled the life of this thing. Now I'm looking at $1200 for a new one. Anyone else ignore this thing and pay the price?

Oh man, I did the exact same thing. Found out about that stupid rod after ten years of ownership and the tank started leaking a month later.

Right, because who needs instructions when you can just let your hot water smell like a sulfur swamp for a decade. Sounds like you paid the "learning by expensive mistake" tax same as the rest of us.
