My AC guy told me swamp coolers use way less power here and I feel dumb for not checking sooner

I was complaining to my neighbor about my $210 July electric bill and he said half the houses on our street near Eubank run swamp coolers instead of refrigerated AC. I looked it up on the PNM site and a swamp cooler pulls something like 300 watts versus 3,500 for central air, which in our dry climate is a big deal. Has anyone here actually switched, and did the install cost pay for itself or am I about to blow money chasing a lower bill?
