My neighbor saw my swamp cooler pad and asked how old it was, and that question got me thinking
I was out back hosing off my swamp cooler pad on Saturday when my neighbor Rick walked over and asked how long I'd been running the same one. I said about four summers, and he just kind of laughed and said his dad used to swap pads every single June back in the 80s, no exceptions. That got us talking for like 20 minutes about how folks around here used to just do things on a schedule, like flushing the water heater every spring or sealing the driveway before monsoon season. Now I wait until something breaks or the air starts smelling weird, which honestly is how I ended up with a cracked pad last August when it was 98 degrees out. Rick said he still writes his stuff on a calendar on the fridge, and I'm half tempted to copy him. Does anyone here still keep a seasonal checklist, or do you all just fix things when they go bad like me?
Did Rick mention what his dad actually checked off on those lists? Because I bet half of it wasn't even about fixing things, it was about walking around the house once a month and just looking at stuff. My uncle did that every first Saturday, coffee in hand, checking the water heater pan for rust, looking under the sinks for drips, poking at the caulk around the windows. The whole thing took him maybe 30 minutes and he almost never had a surprise breakdown, while I'm out here finding out my pad is cracked when it's already 98 out.
