My uncle's swamp cooler quote was dead on, wish I'd listened sooner

Back in June my uncle who used to do HVAC in Los Lunas told me to clean the cooler pads every two weeks, not just once a month. I figured he was being dramatic since my cooler ran fine for years on the monthly schedule. Then that heatwave hit in late July and my living room hit 86 degrees no matter what I did. I pulled off the side panels and the pads were caked with sand and dust so bad the water couldn't even soak through half of them. Replaced the pads with the cheap ones from Home Depot for like 35 bucks and within an hour it was blowing cold again. He also told me to check the float valve for sediment but I skipped that too, ended up with a leak that soaked my garage floor. Anyone else have a relative that was annoyingly right about their maintenance calls?
