Serious question, my roofer in Albuquerque told me to stop pressure washing my shingles, was he right?

I was rinsing off the roof on a Saturday near Eubank when my roofer pulled up and said the 3,000 psi stream was pushing grit right off the asphalt. He said to use a garden hose and a soft brush instead, so now I just spot clean the bad spots twice a year. Does anyone else around here have a better way to deal with those black streaks without wrecking the shingles?
