Showerthought: I tried that 'no dig' landscaping method on my west side yard
Everyone online said it would save my back and kill the weeds. I laid down cardboard and three inches of mulch over my gravel patch last spring. By August, the bindweed had pushed right through it and the cardboard was a soggy mess. It just held moisture against the ground and made a perfect spot for more weeds to start. I spent more time pulling weeds than I would have just tilling the area once. Has anyone here had a different result with that method in our dirt?

My uncle in Spokane tried the cardboard method for two years straight. He said you need a full SIX inches of mulch, not three, to really block the light. Even then, some weeds like bindweed are just monsters. He switched to using that heavy black landscape fabric underneath and it finally worked, but he says it's a pain to put down.

Yeah, your uncle's right about that fabric being a pain to lay out flat. I've found it works, but you gotta cut holes for any plants you already have, and it can tear. Honestly, six inches of mulch is the real key, just like he said.
