Went to a hardware clinic at Reeb's last month that completely changed how I patch drywall

Honestly I used to just slap joint compound over holes and hope for the best. Someone at the Reeb's on Menaul showed me how to use a California patch with mesh tape instead of that metal patch kit. They even timed it - took me 8 minutes start to finish on a demo board. Now I don't dread fixing nail pops or small holes from picture frames. Has anyone else tried that method over the metal patches? I'm curious if it holds up as well in our dry climate.

oh man the california patch is a game changer for sure. i switched to it after i put one of those metal patches in and it popped right back out after a month. the mesh tape just bonds so much better with the mud, especially in this dry air we got. i did a hole behind a door handle that got whacked a few times and it's still holding solid two years later. only thing i'd say is make sure you really get the mud into the mesh tight don't just lay it on top.

Gotta disagree with you there Barb. I've been fixing drywall for fifteen years now and those metal patches hold way better for me. Did a hole in my own garage two years ago where the kids kept slamming a door into it and the metal patch is still flush. The California patch always seems to bubble up on me when I sand it down and then you gotta re-mud the whole thing. The key with metal is you gotta bed it in real good with the mud before you tape over it or it'll pop like you said. Different strokes I guess but I'm sticking with what works for me.
