Shoutout to the guy at the Westside Home Depot who told me NOT to paint my stucco
So last weekend I was all set to paint the stucco on my house near Coors and Montano. Had the bucket, the roller, the whole thing in my cart. This older guy in the paint aisle asked what I was doing and when I told him, he just shook his head and said 'you're gonna trap water in there and it'll chunk off in two winters.' I figured he was just some guy running his mouth, but he told me he's been in Abq since the 80s and has watched three neighbors do the exact same thing. I went home and looked it up and he was right, stucco needs to breathe and you have to use the right kind of paint, not just whatever bucket is on sale. Ended up buying a $40 elastomeric sample and testing it on the back wall instead. Two weeks in, the sample spot looks fine but the cheap paint I already put on a patch by the gate is already bubbling from that rain we got. So now I'm peeling it off with a scraper and eating crow lol. Anybody here actually painted their stucco themselves and had it hold up, or should I just call someone?
