Appreciation post: I used to think a 10% tip was fine, but after working as a server in Tampa for a summer, I now always aim for at least 20% because I saw how much of that money goes to tip-out and taxes.

What's a job you've had that completely changed how you see a common adult task?

Oh, that's so true. I did a short stint in retail, and it totally changed how I put things back on shelves. I used to just leave stuff anywhere when I changed my mind. Now I always walk an item back to its exact spot. I saw how much time the staff spends just fixing misplaced merchandise, and it's hours of unpaid work. It made me realize that little bit of effort from a customer saves someone a huge headache later.

Ever notice how the worst offenders are the cold items? Someone will take a frozen pizza, decide against it, and just leave it melting on a shelf with the cereal. Now some poor soul has to throw out a soggy box and clean up the mess. That's not just extra work, it's actual waste. Makes you wonder what goes through people's heads.

Look, I get the frustration but I disagree. Putting stuff back is the customer's job. The store pays people to stock and clean up. That's literally part of the job description. Nobody forced them to work retail. It's a job like any other. If you buy something and change your mind, just hand it to an employee. They get paid to deal with it. Walking it back yourself is nice but it's not your responsibility. Stores already build that labor into their payroll.
