I finally tried a budget for my groceries and it actually works

For years I thought making a strict food budget was just for people who were super broke or super organized, and I figured I'd just spend what I spent. Last month, my partner and I looked at our bank statement and saw we dropped over $800 at the grocery store in Chicago, which felt insane for two people. We decided to try a $125 per week limit using a simple app. The first trip was hard, I had to put back the fancy cheese and the pre-cut fruit, but we still ate well. After four weeks, we not only stuck to it but had $60 left over, which we used for a nice dinner out. It made me realize I was just tossing stuff in the cart without thinking. Has anyone else found a simple trick that finally got their food spending under control?

Honestly the biggest thing for me was switching to a cash envelope for the grocery run. Something about physically handing over the bills makes you way more aware than just tapping a card. You start to feel silly buying that third bag of chips when you're counting out real money. It turns the whole trip into a game where the goal is to get change back.

Wow, @james_kim, I used to think cash was a hassle but you're totally right.

You're right about the physical money making you more aware, but I've found it also changes how you shop before you even get to the register. When I know I only have that envelope, I start doing mental math in each aisle, putting things back before they're in my cart. It stops impulse buys at the shelf, not just at the checkout. The limit forces a kind of focus that a card never does. You plan meals around what's on sale that week, not what you're craving. It turns shopping into a strategy session, not just a spending trip.
