Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he's been using the same furnace filter for 5 years

I was grabbing some paint and this older dude tells the clerk he just vacuums his filter instead of swapping it out. Dude said it's saved him like $300 since 2020. Anyone else ever try this or is that just asking for your HVAC to die?

Vacuums mine too and act like I'm saving the planet... until my AC dies mid-August and I'm sweating through my shirt. Just hoping the next filter I buy lasts me another 5 years, right?

I mean, vacuuming it is fine but 5 years is way too long even with cleaning.

Forgot to vacuum mine for 6 months once and it still worked fine when I finally did it.
