That time my landlord's note about the pilot light sounded dumb but wasn't

Last month in Columbus, my water heater went cold and the note taped on it said 'push the red button three times, wait ten minutes.' I thought it was a joke, so I called a plumber who quoted me $350 just to look at it. Out of spite, I tried the note while waiting, and the pilot light actually clicked back on. Turns out the previous tenant left it for the next person, and I almost paid a fortune for a button press. Has anyone else found weird handwritten instructions that turned out to be the real fix?
