Tried to save $1500 by fixing my own roof leak in Portland. It's now a $5000 insurance claim. Anyone else have a DIY project go this wrong?

@carr.brooke nailed it with the redirect thing. Water always finds the path of least resistance, and you just gave it a new one. Portland rain is relentless, it'll test every single weak spot you didn't know you had. Best to leave anything above the gutters to the pros who know the local weather patterns.

Yeah, that "redirects the water inside the walls" line hits hard. I used to think I could handle anything with a YouTube video, but that kind of hidden damage changed my mind fast.

Portland rain finds every new weak spot you create. I learned the hard way that a temporary patch just redirects the water inside the walls. Now I call a pro for anything above the gutters.
