A coffee shop chat in Austin changed how I handle partner contracts

I was meeting a potential agency partner at a small coffee shop on South Congress last month. We were talking about a joint project for a client in the hospitality sector. He casually mentioned their standard 60-day payment terms, which was way longer than my usual 30. I almost signed the agreement on the spot, but that detail made me pause. Now I always ask about payment terms and project handoff points in the first meeting, not after the work starts. Has anyone else found a simple question that saved them from a bad deal?

Totally get that! I was about to partner with a local influencer once and almost missed asking about content approval rights. They wanted final say on everything, which would have meant endless edits for me. Now I bring up the revision process and kill fees right away, before we even talk money. It just sets the tone and filters out the people who would be a nightmare to work with.

Ever feel like you're the only one who learned this lesson the hard way? I once forgot to ask about a kill fee and ended up paying for a video that was just a guy eating a sandwich.

Wasn't there a whole article about this in a marketing newsletter last month? They called it setting "guardrails" early. Basically, if you don't lay out the rules first, you end up in a power struggle later. Smart to bring up revisions and kill fees right at the start. It saves so much time and stress. Lets everyone know what they're signing up for.
