My mother in law's toaster oven died at Thanksgiving, so I brought my air fryer and now I am mad about one thing
So we were at my in laws place in Rochester for Thanksgiving and their toaster oven just quit halfway through warming the rolls. I ran home and grabbed my air fryer and did the green bean casserole topping and the rolls in it, and honestly the topping came out crisper than the oven version ever does. Now here is my problem. Every recipe I find for air fryer casseroles says to use a dish that fits the basket, but the hot air only really hits the top, so the middle stays cold unless I stir it. Are you all doing the foil sling thing or just accepting that you have to stir halfway through, because I cannot decide which camp I am in.
You said the middle stays cold unless you stir, which makes me wonder what dish you are using, because that changes the whole answer. A deep round dish in a basket is basically a chimney for hot air, so the top crisps and the bottom sits there. A shallow dish that almost fills the basket lets the air move around more, and I have had better luck just going low and slow instead of cranking the heat. So my question back to you is this: are you trying to keep a scoopable casserole texture, or would you rather have a firm set slice you can cut clean? That answer tells you if the foil sling is even worth the trouble.
