My quest for perfect air fryer fries led to an unexpected grease fire drill

The recipe said 'shake halfway' but neglected to mention the volcanic oil spatter that would ensue. I now have a new respect for the term 'standing back' in kitchen safety guides.

After my own grease fire incident last Tuesday, I've renamed my air fryer 'Mount Vesuvius'. The 'shake halfway' instruction should come with a hazard pay warning for the operator. I half expected to see miniature oil volcanoes erupting from the basket during my last attempt. My cat now hides under the bed whenever I even glance at the appliance, which is a new level of kitchen performance anxiety. It's impressive how a device marketed for healthy cooking can simulate a kitchen fireworks display with such dramatic effect. I guess we're all part of an unplanned culinary safety workshop thanks to these recipes that skip the fine print on lava like oil spatter.

Used to dismiss the risks, but not anymore after this.

My friend's air fryer mishap involved flaming oil droplets and a frantic search for the fire extinguisher.
