Turns out scrubbing it with steel wool and dish soap was slowly eating the nonstick layer, and switching to a soft sponge and warm water with a splash of vinegar fixed it in one wash, so has anyone else wrecked a basket before finding out the hard way?
Wait, you were using steel wool on it every single day? That is straight up metal wool, of course it was shredding the coating, that stuff is made to scrape off burnt junk from cast iron, not to touch a nonstick basket. And you did this for four months before you caught on? The eggs must have been turning into cement on there way before the flakes showed up. Six weeks of everything sticking sounds like pure hell and you just kept scrubbing harder, which made the whole thing worse every time. At least the vinegar fix is easy and cheap, that is a good tip for the rest of us.
