Wait, are you preheating it empty or with the food in there? Because I found out the hard way that dropping cold hashbrowns into a screaming hot basket (like, full 400 degrees) makes the outside burn before the middle thaws. @knight.mason is right about the timing though, I learned to give my frozen stuff a 5 minute head start at 300 before cranking it up, saves a lot of sad, raw middles. Also, parchment paper liners are a game changer for cleanup, just don't leave them in empty while preheating or you'll have a smoke detector concert.

The preheat thing reminds me of my friend Jenna (she's the type who reads every kitchen gadget manual cover to cover) who once tried to make those frozen egg bites from Costco without preheating. She figured the whole point of an air fryer was convenience, right? Well, the egg bites came out like sad, rubbery pucks on the outside but still cold and slimy in the middle, so now she's a strict preheat convert. She also learned the hard way that leaving parchment paper in during preheat is a bad move, had to air out her whole apartment with fans because the smoke alarm wouldn't stop.
