The nonstick coating on my air fryer basket started peeling off after 6 months...

I was cooking some chicken wings last night and noticed little black flakes in the food. Checked the basket and the coating is just coming off in sheets. Had to throw out the whole batch and now I'm worried about what I ate before I noticed. Anyone else have this happen with their basket? I'm looking at silicone liners now but not sure if those are safe either.

Have you checked whether your air fryer basket is actually nonstick or just coated with a standard ceramic layer? A lot of these cheaper baskets use a coating that isn't true nonstick, and it can start flaking after just a few months, especially if you use metal utensils or high heat. Silicone liners are generally safe but you have to be careful with the brand, some of them can melt or offgas if they aren't food grade. I'd honestly just replace the basket with a stainless steel one if you can find it, those never flake and are a lot easier to clean without worrying about coatings.

Your situation sounds awful, and I'm sorry you had to throw out a whole meal because of that flaking coating. Those black flakes are definitely not something you want in your food, and at six months old that basket should still be in good shape. I hope you can get a replacement that holds up better for you.
