Lead mechanic at my shop was right about torquing the AN fittings by hand first
A guy named Dale who has been turning wrenches for 31 years showed me to start AN fittings by hand until they seat before I touch a torque wrench. I figured it was just old school stuff and kept using the wrench from the start on a fuel line job in Bakersfield. Cross threaded two fittings on a 3/8 line and had to cut and reflare the whole section, cost me 4 hours on a Friday afternoon. Dale just looked at me and said "finger tight first, every time" and walked off. Now I want to know if anyone else has a lead who handed down a rule like this that saved them a rework.
