My old lead mechanic swore by safety wire twisting, but I always used pliers

Back in 2005 at the Phoenix hangar, my lead Frank told me hand twisting safety wire was the only way to catch hairline cracks in the fittings, so I did it his way for two years straight. Then a supervisor watched me and said using pliers is fine and actually faster, so I switched and never found a single difference in inspections. Do you trust the old school methods just because someone senior insists, or do you stick with what works for your hands?
