PSA: Stop using WD-40 on aircraft hinges unless you like corrosion

Saw a new guy dousing a Cessna door hinge with the blue and yellow can last Friday. Told him that stuff collects dirt and dries into a gummy mess. Use LPS-1 or Tri-Flow instead. Anyone else have to play cleanup on a bird that got the wrong lube?

Boeing's own maintenance manual for the 737 actually lists WD-40 as an acceptable hinge lubricant for certain door assemblies. I've used it on my old Piper for three years and never had a corrosion issue once. Maybe the problem isn't the product but how much the guy was putting on.

Dude, my uncle used WD-40 on his rusty old lawnmower once and it actually caught fire because he sprayed it on the hot engine. I guess the lesson is just don’t go crazy with the nozzle.
