That $80 borescope I bought on Amazon is already paying for itself
I picked up a cheap borescope off Amazon for about 80 bucks last month, mostly to check inside cylinders without pulling jugs. Used it yesterday on a Lycoming engine at our hangar in Denver that had a rough mag check, and I spotted a tiny chunk of carbon holding open an exhaust valve. Saved me from tearing down the whole top end on a hunch. Has anyone else had luck with the super cheap endoscopes, or did I just get lucky with this one?

That bit about carbon holding open the exhaust valve is pretty specific, how big was that chunk? Did you have to pull the cylinder to get it out or did it come loose on its own?

rileyellis is really leaning into this like it's some huge deal, but honestly I've seen carbon buildup way worse than that just blow out on its own after a good hard run. Unless that chunk was the size of a dime or something, I bet it just rattled around for a few minutes then shot out the tailpipe. People act like carbon deposits are the end of the world, but on a high mileage engine they're practically a fact of life. I'd probably just drive it hard for a bit and see if it clears up before I went pulling the head off.
