That one engineer who fought me on a torque value still bugs me

Back in 2019 at the Delta hangar in Atlanta, I had an engineer tell me a 40 foot-pound spec was fine for a flap track bolt, even though my manual said 35. I showed him the page, he waved it off and said his experience beat paper. I torqued it to 35 anyway and he filed a complaint, but the lead backed me up after checking the revision. Has anyone else had to push back on a desk guy who never turned a wrench in his life?

That "his experience beat paper" line gets me every time, same song and dance from guys who haven't touched a wrench since school. Had a similar fight with a quality engineer about a landing gear bolt, he swore the older spec was fine while I was holding the revised page in my hand. Ended up doing the same as you, followed the book, and he tried to write me up too, but the supervisor saw the date on the revision and shut him down real quick.
