The debate on replacing tires - new vs retread on a budget

I spent $1200 on a set of new retread tires for my Cessna 172 last spring at the shop near Bakersfield. They've held up fine for 8 months but I'm starting to see some weird wear on the edges that has me second guessing. On the other hand, a buddy spent double that on premium new tires and says they'll outlast mine by years. What's your take - are retreads a smart money move or a false economy waiting to bite you?

$1200 for retreads that are already showing weird edge wear sounds about right for the "you get what you pay for" special. Maybe your buddy's premium new tires are overkill for a 172 but at least he doesn't have to squint at the tread during preflight wondering if today's the day they decide to delaminate. Guess it depends if you'd rather save a few hundred bucks now or explain to the insurance guy why your tire left chunks on the runway.

Well, retreads are fine for the rest of us but your wear sounds odd.
