Watched a kid safety wire a fuel filter backwards at the hangar in Reno and had to step in
I was doing a 100 hour on a Cessna 172 last Tuesday at our shop near the Reno airport when I noticed the new guy had already safetied the fuel filter and was moving on to the cowl. Something looked off so I leaned in and sure enough, he had the wire running the wrong way through the bolt head. I told him to cut it and redo it and he got a little defensive, said his A&P instructor taught him that way. I pulled out the AC 43.13 and showed him the figure and he went quiet, then redid it the right way, took him about 15 minutes the second time. The scary part is he was about to sign it off and I only caught it because I happened to glance over while grabbing a socket. I get that we're all rushed but this is the stuff that gets people killed, a backwards safety wire on a fuel filter is not a small deal. How do you all handle it when a newer mechanic pushes back on a correction, do you just show the book or is there a better way to get through to them?
Did his A&P instructor also teach him to safety the oil filter with baling twine? Showing the AC 43.13 figure is the move since nobody can argue with the book, but the defensive part is what worries me. A guy who digs in over a clear mistake on a fuel filter is the same guy who signs off on something worse down the road when nobody is looking over his shoulder.
