Lost a Saturday and $120 on a keypad that was fine

Last month I spent an entire Saturday troubleshooting a new keypad at a condo job in Nashville, replaced the board, ran new wire, even swapped the transformer, only to find out an old motion sensor was backfeeding voltage and confusing the panel. I burned $120 on parts that weren't even the issue, plus a half-day of labor I couldn't bill to the client. Has anyone else chased a ghost like this where the problem turned out to be something completely unrelated to what you were replacing?

Did you check the KEYPAD ITSELF for a firmware update after you swapped everything out? Because I've seen this EXACT scenario where the motion sensor messes with the panel, but the real fix was the keypad needed a software patch to ignore the backfeed, not new parts. The board and wire were fine the whole time, but the keypad's logic was getting confused by the voltage spike and showing a false trouble condition. You probably would've saved the whole day if you just called the manufacturer's tech line BEFORE buying anything. They've got a whole database of "phantom call" cases like this, and most of them end up being a settings change, not a hardware swap. I know it's boring advice, but that's the kind of thing that only shows up when you're already $120 deep and out of patience.
