My old boss in Tampa said to always use a 22/2 for keypad runs, no matter what.

Honestly, I got burned last month on a big house job where the voltage drop was a real problem and I had to re-pull everything. Anyone else run into that with long wire runs?

That Tampa rule is asking for trouble on anything over 50 feet. Voltage drop isn't some made up thing, it's basic math. Had a run last year that was maybe 80 feet and the keypad was barely working. Ended up pulling 18/4 to fix it. Your old boss saved money on wire but cost you a whole day of labor.

Reminds me of a job where we used 22/2 for a driveway gate opener at about 60 feet. The motor would just hum and get stuck halfway, drove the homeowner nuts. We swapped it for 16/2 and it worked like a charm, no more callbacks.

My buddy learned that the hard way, just like logan705 said, on a long gate run.
