Showerthought: a retired installer in Tampa told me my DIP switch labels were for me, not the next guy
He watched me sharpie a panel legend in 2019 and said the next tech will never read it, so label the wire itself, not the box. Now I tag every zone wire with a printed wrap at the can, and a helper found a swapped pair in 4 minutes instead of 40. Do you label wires, boxes, or both?
That Tampa installer was right and it stings a little. I spent a whole Saturday in 2021 making a beautiful panel legend with a label maker, color coded and everything, and then watched a guy troubleshoot that same panel six months later and never once look at it. He just started beeping wires out one by one. I wanted to cry. Now I do both, printed wrap on the wire at the can and a basic tag on the box, because the box label helps me and the wire tag helps whoever comes next. The guy who taught me did it all with masking tape and a ballpoint, and somehow his stuff was easier to trace than mine.
