TIL I hit 1,000 panel swaps and the one that taught me the most was number 814
Everyone on here keeps saying you need the newest touchscreen keypads to stay busy, and I think that is backwards. I hit my 1,000th panel swap in March doing a job in Gary, Indiana, and the install that actually taught me something was number 814, a 20 year old house where the homeowner still used the original keypad and never had one false alarm. Half my callbacks come from fancy features nobody asked for, not from the basic wiring. Anybody else finding that plain installs get fewer service calls than the smart ones?
Course the fancy ones get more callbacks. Last month I swapped a guy over to one of those app controlled deals and he called me twice in one week because his kid messed with the schedule and then because the wifi dropped. Meanwhile number 814 just sits there doing its job like a brick, zero drama. It is almost like the panels that beep and blink and need updates every few months are the ones that wake you up at 2am. Give me a plain keypad and a homeowner who knows their code any day. The smart stuff is great until the smart stuff starts thinking for itself.
