A climber in Fort Collins said my hinge was too wide and it wrecked my confidence for a bit
I was dropping a big cottonwood removal off a back lean and thought my face cut was clean, but he stopped me and said the hinge was almost 3 inches thick on a 22 inch trunk. He told me straight up that a hinge that fat fights the pull line instead of guiding the tree, and I had been doing it that way for years without thinking. Now I aim for about 10 percent of the trunk diameter and my drops have been way more predictable. Anybody else had a critiquer call out a bad habit you didn't even know you had?
That line about "doing it that way for years without thinking" really hits home for me. It is funny how we can go on autopilot with stuff and never question it until someone points it out. I see the same thing with people and their driving habits or how they load a dishwasher, everybody just does what they were shown once and sticks with it. Your cottonwood story is a good reminder that a fresh set of eyes can save you a lot of grief, even if it stings a little at first.
