I finally realized why my pruning cuts kept dying back after a talk with an old-timer

Learned that lesson the hard way myself. Thought I was being clever making a clean cut right at the trunk but didn't leave a collar. Next thing I know the whole branch died back six inches and I'm staring at this ugly stub wondering what I did wrong. Old timer at the garden center just laughed and said I was "pruning like a city slicker with a new chainsaw." Guess he wasn't wrong.

Read a forestry blog that said flush cuts invite rot straight into the trunk.
