I switched from a pole saw to a handsaw for small limb work and my shoulders stopped hurting
I do a lot of small pruning jobs around Chapel Hill and for two years I reached for my pole saw for anything above chest height. My shoulder ached so bad by Friday that I could barely lift my coffee mug. In January I started carrying a 13 inch Silky handsaw and a 6 foot ladder instead, and the difference was huge. The cuts are cleaner, I can feel the branch better, and I finish most yards faster because I am not fighting the weight up high. Anyone else give up the pole saw for smaller stuff, or do you still pull it out for certain trees?
Going up the ladder instead of reaching with a heavy saw also means you actually get your eyes right on the cut, which is why the branches heal better and you skip the torn bark. Only time I still grab the pole saw is for stuff too high or too sketchy to climb near, like a dead limb over a roof.
