Rant: wasted $80 on those rubber tree protectors last spring

I put them on 12 young maples back in March and by August the bark was all soft and rotten underneath from trapped moisture, has anyone else had this problem with the cheaper spiral wrap?

Yeah "cheaper spiral wrap" is the problem, the good stuff lets air flow.

Yeah, you gotta get the mesh kind or it's basically a solid plastic tube.

The mesh kind definitely helps with airflow, but I've had the solid stuff hold up way better in high heat areas under the hood. @the_lee, have you ever seen the solid spiral wrap actually melt onto wires? I replaced a whole harness because that cheap mesh let dirt and moisture in and trapped it against the insulation. The solid stuff might not breathe, but it keeps everything sealed and dry. Neither option is perfect, but I'd rather deal with heat buildup than corrosion any day. Different tools for different jobs, I guess.
