Rope wrench vs mechanical prusik, after 6 months on removals I'm switching back
Been running a rope wrench setup since May on jobs around Portland. Everyone online swears by it for SRT work. But after 6 months and 40+ removals, I'm done with it. The wrench is faster on big straight trunk pieces, sure. But on any limb walk or crown reduction it's constant readjustment. My old mechanical prusik with a foot ascender is clunkier but WAY more forgiving when I need to switch between SRT and DRT mid tree. I also hate how the wrench binds up when you stop to make a cut. Has anyone else gone backwards on this after giving it a real shot?

Saw a guy on another forum say the same thing after a season of removals, said the wrench is a tool for people who climb the same tree twice a week, not for guys bouncing between 10 different jobs. The binding when you stop is the real kicker, I've heard that complaint from three different climbers now. The mechanical prusik might cost you a few seconds on the way up, but it earns that time back when you are not fighting the thing all day. Different tools for different chaos, I guess.

That binding issue is real, but a good rope walker setup solves most of it.
