Thought stump grinders were for lazy crews until I watched one chew through a 30 inch oak stump in 40 minutes
Back in 2009 I was on a crew in Missoula and we did every removal stump by hand with a mattock and a sawzall, which took two guys most of a day and left my back wrecked for a week. When the company bought its first grinder I figured it was a toy for guys who did not want to sweat, and I said so out loud to my foreman. Then a client on Higgins Ave had a 30 inch oak stump eight inches from her foundation, and that machine ate it down past grade in 40 minutes with no damage to the house. Now I want to know what other old school habits I am holding onto for no good reason, so what is the one tool you swore off and later ate your words over?
A 30 inch oak in 40 minutes still seems fast to me, but I'm not sure one good day proves grinders beat hand work across the board. Half the stumps we pulled in Missoula were in spots a machine couldn't even reach. Give me a mattock and a sawzall and I'll still take my chances on some of those jobs.
