TIL to never buy a cheap rope saw off Amazon for a canopy job

Snapped after three cuts on a live oak in Austin and I ended up having to climb back down and buy a proper Silky saw for $85, has anyone else had a tool fail mid-branch like that?

Oh man, that steak knife situation sounds absolutely miserable.

Twenty bucks says that folding saw had a locking mechanism held together by a single rivet. I've had the same thing happen with a cheap pruning saw from the hardware store, the blade just gave up halfway through a branch. The people who design these tools have never actually used them in a real tree, they just test them on a bench. A steak knife is actually a solid backup though, the serrated edge on most of them can chew through green wood if you have patience. Only thing I'd do different is wrap the handle in electrical tape so your hand doesn't slip when it gets slick with sap.

Snapped the blade off my folding saw halfway up a pecan tree and had to finish the cut with a steak knife.
