Vent: a retired climber in Knoxville said my 3 point stance was lazy, now I can't stop thinking about it
Had a grizzled old climber watch me spike up a red oak outside Knoxville 3 weeks ago and he said my lanyard was slack and I was leaning back into the flip line like a tourist on a ski lift. I brushed it off at the time but tried his way on the next 6 trees and my hip and lower back were way less wrecked by Friday. Now half the young guys on my crew say the old school tight lanyard style is slower and kills your rhythm on long ascents. The other half swear it saves your body and you make up the time anyway because you aren't stopping to stretch every 20 minutes. I've been climbing 11 years and honestly can't tell if I got lazy or if this is just a style thing. Anybody else get called out by an older climber and end up completely changing how they work, or did you stick with your own way?
How many of those 6 trees did you climb with the tight lanyard before your back started feeling better, and did your pace actually drop or just feel like it did?
