Watch out for those cheap 'professional' grade stump grinders on online marketplaces

I found a listing for a used stump grinder for $2,800 on a local buy and sell site last month, and the seller swore it was a solid machine. It looked okay in the pictures, but when I got it to a job site, the hydraulic lines blew out on the third stump. The repair bill was over $1,200, and I lost a full day's work with the crew standing around. Has anyone had a decent experience buying bigger equipment secondhand, or is it always a gamble?

Man, that's rough... I bought a used trencher off a guy who said it ran like a top. The engine was fine, but the whole feed chain was about two minutes from snapping clean in half... cost me almost as much as the machine to fix it right.

Ran like a top" is a classic line, @the_sam, I once bought a truck that only ran like a top if you spun it really, really fast.

My buddy’s mechanic does pre-purchase inspections for fifty bucks.
