Debate: should we keep artifacts in their original locations or move them to museums?

I was talking to a guy named Dave at a dig site near my town last weekend. He said putting the old pottery in a museum takes it out of context and ruins the story it tells. But I think if we leave it there, looters or weather will destroy it anyway. What do you all think is better for the artifacts themselves?

Man, I feel you on this one. It's a tough spot because both sides have a good point. I've seen some old arrowheads and potsherds get stolen right out of a site near my hometown, and it sucks knowing they're gone forever just for someone to sell online. At the same time, when you see those pieces in a museum, they just feel dead compared to being in the ground where they were found. Don't you think maybe we could do something in between, like cover them up better or make some kind of on-site protection so people can still see them where they belong?

That phrase "they just feel dead" really hits it, same way houseplants look sad when you move them from where they were actually thriving outside.
