Got roasted on a dig forum for calling a soil stain a hearth, and honestly it made me better at recording
I posted a photo of a dark patch from a site near Flagstaff last month and said it looked like a hearth, and a commenter with 20 years in the field said to stop eyeballing color and start looking at the shape, the ash, and the magnetic reading. I was so annoyed at first but then I went back and looked at my notes and realized I had never actually recorded any of that. So now I log a little sketch, the Munsell reading, and whether there is charcoal or burned clay before I decide anything. Do you all call it based on features or do you wait for lab results? I am torn because I do not want to slow down the whole unit either.
