Had to pick between two dig sites for my first field school, went with the one in Belize
It was either a Maya site in Belize or a Roman fort in England. I picked the Caves Branch site in Belize because the lead archaeologist, Dr. Chen, had a rep for letting undergrads actually handle artifacts. Spent six weeks mapping a midden and found a jade bead that changed the whole team's view on trade routes. Anyone else had a tough call between two field opportunities that paid off?

Honestly, that's just the classic "practical skill vs. real passion" choice you see everywhere (like picking a major). Getting hands-on with the stuff that lights you up is what makes the grind worth it.

King.stella over here sounding like she’s applying for a job at the Pompeii Heritage Board (which, hey, maybe she is). Yeah, sure, documenting a wall trench is real important for future digs, but let’s be honest - nobody’s childhood dream was to grow up and make detailed sketches of old rocks. You get that dopamine hit from finding a coin or a bone, not from filling out a form about how the mortar was mixed.

Missed out on the Roman fort's stratigraphy, which is a way better skill for future digs. You learn proper recording methods on a structured site like that, not just hunting for cool finds. Handling artifacts is fun, but knowing how to properly document a wall trench is what gets you hired later.
