Hot take: that 'lost city' lidar hype in Guatemala is mostly just old corn fields
Everyone keeps sharing those lidar scans from Peten like they found a new mega-city, but 80% of those lines are just ancient farm terraces and old roads. I walked a site near Tikal in 2019 with a survey team and the 'pyramids' on the map turned out to be one small mound and a lot of limestone. Has anyone here worked with lidar data directly and seen how fast it gets overhyped?
