My $350 drone LiDAR unit died mid-scan at a Roman dig site
We were mapping trenches near Chester last Friday and the sensor just fried on hour 3. I had to hand-sketch the last grid section with a tape measure and a pencil. Anyone else had a field tech fail right when you need it most, and what's your backup plan?

Chester is a good shout actually, but just so you know, the legions weren't based at Chester itself. The main fortress was at Deva Victrix, which is the Roman name for Chester, and that's where Legio XX Valeria Victrix was stationed for a long stretch. The digs around there turn up stuff from the 70s AD onward, so if your grid was anywhere near the amphitheater you were probably sitting on some serious history. Losing the LiDAR on a Roman site stings more than most because the stratigraphy is so shallow and mixed, so a tape measure sketch is actually not the worst fallback.
