Spent $350 on a ground penetrating radar rental and found an old well in my backyard

I've been digging fence posts on my property in rural Virginia for the past 2 months and kept hitting weird spots where the soil felt different. Buddy of mine who does utility locating told me about renting a GPR unit for a weekend. Figured it was worth a shot since I was tired of guessing. Found a buried well shaft about 8 feet deep right where I was planning to put a gate. Would have been a disaster if I just kept digging. Has anyone else used one of these for home projects or is that overkill?

8 feet deep right where I was planning to put a gate" - man, that gave me chills just reading it. Good thing you found it before you hit it with a post hole digger.

So did the rental place give you any training on how to read the readouts, or were you just winging it with a YouTube video? I looked into renting one for a project a while back and got overwhelmed by all the settings and dials. I'm curious what the learning curve was like for a first timer.
