The dig at Sutton Hoo changed my mind about metal detectors
I used to think metal detectors were just for hobbyists looking for loose change. But last summer I volunteered at the Sutton Hoo site in Suffolk and watched a team member pinpoint a small Anglo-Saxon buckle 8 inches down that the naked eye would never catch. That buckle ended up being part of a larger burial context we mapped out over three days. Has anyone else had their opinion flipped by working on a specific site?

That buckle find sounds unreal, happy you got to see it happen.

Three hours of digging in the mud for a piece of metal that's been buried for 200 years just doesn't sound worth it to me. I'd rather spend that time at home watching a game or taking a nap. Unless that buckle is worth enough to pay my rent for a month, I don't see the appeal in getting all dirty and tired for a trinket.
