TIL the 3 inch trowel I lost at a dig in New Mexico turned up in a shoe box 8 years later
Back in 2016 I was working a site near Silver City, New Mexico, and my Marshalltown trowel vanished during a lunch break. I tore apart the tool tent, checked every bucket, and even sifted the backdirt pile twice, but it was just gone. Last month a former student emailed me a photo of it, labeled with my initials in Sharpie, sitting in a shoe box of leftover gear she finally unpacked after moving to Albuquerque. She mailed it back and I used it on a survey last weekend like nothing happened. Has anyone else had a tool or a find come back to them after years in someone else's storage?
My grandpa lost a pocket knife in the hay loft around 2003 and a neighbor kid found it stuck in a floorboard five years later. He was so happy he gave the kid twenty bucks and a lecture about checking your pockets. That knife is still in his truck console today.
