Update: finally saw the Roman mosaic at Chedworth and nobody warns you about the little things
Went to Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire last month, and I had been waiting years to see that mosaic floor they found back in 1864. Honestly the big pattern everyone photographs is great, but what got me was the tiny crack running through the middle of it and how the little stone tiles are set at slightly different angles in one corner. I stood there for 20 minutes and counted maybe 40 tiles that did not line up like the rest, and I kept thinking, who was the guy laying this who rushed the corner because his back hurt or it was getting dark. There is a whole section roped off where they left the floor in place under a cover building, and the air inside smelled like wet chalk. A volunteer told me they get around 60,000 visitors a year, which surprised me for a spot down a single track lane. Ngl I left kind of annoyed that every sign and guide just points at the fancy middle and skips the messy edges where you can actually feel the human hands. Does any site do a good job explaining the mistakes and fixes in old floors like this, or do I just have to squint at it myself?
